Chapter 01
The limb that's already decided to come down
A dead or dying limb over a roof, a driveway, or a power drop isn't a question of if, it's a question of when and which way. Selective cuts, not a shave
The crew climbs in full harness and PPE for anything the bucket truck can't reach cleanly, and works the canopy with selective cuts rather than an even trim across the top. Each cut is chosen for the tree's health first, then for what's safe underneath, then for how the yard reads once the crew is gone. The bucket truck still does the job where it reaches, especially on taller trees along a property line or over a driveway, and it's faster and steadier for the parts of the canopy it can get to squarely. Between the bucket and the climbers, most of a residential lot is in reach without cutting corners on either the tree or the ground underneath it.
Chapter 03
When to call again
Pruning isn't a once-and-done job. A tree that's been opened up and cleaned of dead wood should get looked at again every couple of years, sooner if a storm has passed through or a limb starts hanging lower than it used to. That timing matters most before nor'easter and hurricane season, when a weak limb that survives a calm summer won't survive high wind. Chris V's own tree, one estimated at 125 to 150 years old, was first trimmed by Bernie in an attempt to save it before storm risk finally made removal the safer call. Trimming early is often what keeps a removal from becoming the only option.
